WHAT IS MARKETING?

I was motivated to write this article because too often when I ask business owners
what they think marketing is, I usually get two words; advertising and selling.

 

Marketing isn’t just advertising or selling. It’s a strategic approach to acquiring
new customers and prospects. It’s about finding people who are most likely
to need the products or services you offer, then taking steps to convert
them into paying customers.

 

Marketing is about finding out what the needs of your potential customers are.
Their challenges and problems; then educating them on how your products
and services will benefit them.  It’s also about implementing activities that
will develop relationships with customers and prospects while encouraging
them to give you referrals and repeat business.

 

So next time you hear the word marketing, think way, way beyond advertising
and selling. Don’t just think of it as one single event or ad. Marketing is
most effective for small business owners when they use many different
tactics, working together to achieve a common goal, like increasing your sales.

4 TIPS TO HELP MAKE YOUR MARKETING MORE EFFECTIVE


One ad in the newspaper, or a yellow page ad does not make a marketing campaign.
A lot of sales professionals and other small business owners invest in marketing,
but are often disappointed with the results. Follow these five tips and your marketing
efforts will be more successful.

 

1. Get to know and understand your target market. 
Develop a profile of your target market. Make sure you have a clear understanding
of who you want to sell to and what their needs and challenges are. Position
yourself as an expert to gain trust and build your credibility with your target market.

2. Do a little research on your competitors.

Learn as much as you can about them. Find out where and how they advertise
what products and services they are offering. Try to come up with something
to differentiate your business from your competitors. For example, your
hours of operation.

3. Prepare effective ads.
Customers and prospects don’t care about your company per say, they
care about the benefits that you’re offering. Your ads should have a powerful
headline that addresses the benefits your target market is looking for.
Place your ads where your customers and prospects are most likely to be exposed
to them. Give people a reason to pick up the phone to call you; a FREE report or guide.

 

4. Follow up! Follow up! Follow up!


Obvious, but often over looked. In a study by the research company, TheYankee
Group; they found between 40% to 80% of new business leads do not become paying
clients or customers due to a lack of follow-up. Many businesses do not have
a follow-up system, so many leads fall through the cracks and never get acted on.
Do you know how many leads in your company never get acted on or acted on too late?
If you don't, it's time for a review of the way you generate and track your leads.
